Momentum Badge Definition

A momentum badge is a visual label Banana Farmer assigns to every tracked asset based on its current Ripeness Score. The four badges (Ripening, Ripe, Overripe, Rotten) map to the lifecycle of a momentum trade, from early buildup through peak acceleration to exhaustion and decline.

What Each Badge Means

Ripening means momentum is building but hasn't peaked. Volume is rising, social mentions are ticking up, and technical indicators are turning bullish. This is the early stage where informed traders start paying attention.

Ripe means the asset is in peak momentum. Volume, sentiment, and technicals are all firing together. This is the sweet spot for entries and the stage where the biggest short-term moves tend to happen.

Overripe means the best part of the move is behind you. Volume is fading, social buzz is cooling, and the stock is vulnerable to profit-taking. Time to tighten stops, not add positions. See the Overripe signal glossary entry for more.

Rotten means momentum has fully reversed. The asset is in decline with no positive signals. Avoid new entries. Existing holders should evaluate whether to exit entirely.

Example

A biotech stock lands FDA approval on Monday. By Tuesday morning, it's flagged as Ripening: volume is 2x normal, Reddit mentions are climbing. Wednesday, it hits Ripe: volume peaks at 4x, every biotech forum is talking about it, RSI is above 70. By Friday, the badge flips to Overripe: volume drops to 1.5x, sentiment threads are shifting to “is it too late?” Traders who used the Ripening badge as an entry signal caught the 12% run. Those who chased at Overripe bought near the top.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do momentum badges update?

Banana Farmer recalculates the Ripeness Score and assigns badges every 15 minutes during market hours. A stock can shift from Ripening to Ripe within a single update cycle if volume and sentiment accelerate fast enough. After hours, the score recalculates less frequently since price and volume data slow down. You're always seeing data that's at most 15 minutes old.

Can a stock skip a badge stage?

Yes, but it's uncommon. A stock could jump from Ripening straight to Overripe if a massive catalyst (earnings beat, FDA approval) causes a one-day spike that exhausts momentum immediately. More typically, stocks progress through stages over 2 to 10 days. The badge system reflects real-time conditions, so if the data supports skipping a stage, the score will reflect that.

Do badges work the same for crypto?

Same framework, calibrated differently. Crypto assets tend to move through badge stages faster because of 24/7 trading and higher volatility. A crypto asset might go from Ripening to Overripe in 2 days where a stock takes a week. Banana Farmer tracks 125 crypto assets with separate volatility thresholds so the badges remain meaningful across both asset classes.
