Thinkorswim is a full trading platform with a scanner built in. Banana Farmer is just a scanner. That's a significant advantage for thinkorswim if you want everything in one place: scanning, charting, analysis, options chains, order entry, and paper trading. All free with a Schwab account.
Free is hard to beat
Thinkorswim costs $0 beyond your brokerage account. The scanner, charting, options analytics, paper trading, and real-time data are all included. If you're already a Schwab/TD Ameritrade customer, you're leaving money on the table by not using the scanner. It's one of the most powerful free tools available to retail traders.
thinkScript customization
thinkScript is a proprietary scripting language that lets you build custom scan criteria, indicators, and alerts. Want to scan for stocks where the 8-EMA just crossed above the 21-EMA while RSI is between 50 and 65 and volume is 2x the 20-day average? You can build that in thinkScript. Want to create a custom indicator that combines three momentum metrics into a composite score? Also possible. The customization ceiling is extremely high.
Options analysis
If you trade options, thinkorswim is in a different league. The options chain interface, probability analysis, Greeks visualization, and risk profile tools are the best available to retail traders. You can scan for specific options criteria (implied volatility rank, unusual options activity, specific spread setups) and execute trades from the same screen. Banana Farmer has no options data at all.
Integrated execution
You find a stock in the scanner, analyze the chart, check the options chain, and place your trade without leaving the platform. That workflow integration matters. With Banana Farmer, you find a signal, then switch to your broker to execute. The extra step isn't huge, but it adds friction and latency for time-sensitive trades.
