This ETF pools money from many investors to buy shares in companies that explore for and produce oil and natural gas. It doesn't drill wells itself but owns pieces of companies that do, like Exxon or Chevron. Investors use it to get exposure to the energy sector without having to pick individual stocks, and it makes money when the stocks it owns go up in price or pay dividends.
The energy sector includes companies that find and produce oil and natural gas. When oil prices are stable or rising, these companies tend to perform better because they can sell their products at higher prices. This ETF gives investors exposure to many of these companies at once.
