This fund collects money from investors and uses it to buy municipal bonds issued by cities, states, and local governments. Investors buy shares of the fund to get exposure to many different bonds at once, which spreads out risk. The fund makes money from the interest payments on the bonds it owns and from selling bonds that increase in value, then distributes most of these earnings to shareholders.
